One of the classic Rovaniemi experiences is stepping across the Arctic Circle — the line marking the edge of the Arctic. It runs right through Santa Claus Village, marked on the ground for the perfect photo.

What is the Arctic Circle?

The Arctic Circle (latitude 66°33'N) is the boundary above which the sun stays below the horizon for at least one full day in winter (the polar night) and never sets for at least one full day in summer (the midnight sun).

The crossing line and certificate

At Santa Claus Village, a painted line and signpost mark the Circle. You can buy an official Arctic Circle crossing certificate as a keepsake — a fun souvenir for kids.

Midnight sun and polar night

Because Rovaniemi sits just north of the Circle, it experiences a short polar-night period around midwinter (very short days) and a midnight-sun period in summer when the sun barely sets.

How to visit

The Village and Circle are 8 km from central Rovaniemi. Visit independently by bus 8, or take a guided tour with hotel pickup. Pair it with an evening aurora hunt.
