The Arktikum is Rovaniemi's flagship museum and science centre, and one of the city's most striking buildings — a long glass tunnel reaching toward the Ounasjoki River. It's the perfect place to warm up and go deeper into the Arctic.
What you'll see
The Arktikum combines a science centre and a regional museum, covering the nature and climate of the Arctic, the culture of the indigenous Sami people, and the history of Rovaniemi and Lapland — including its rebuilding after the Second World War.
Why visit
It's genuinely educational and beautifully presented, giving context to everything you'll see outdoors — from the aurora and the polar night to reindeer herding. It's especially good with children and on very cold days.
Opening and tips
The Arktikum is open year-round with seasonal hours (broadly daytime; check current times). Allow 1.5–2 hours. The glass tunnel itself is a favourite photo spot.
Fit it into your trip
The museum is a great daytime activity between adventures — pair an afternoon at the Arktikum with an evening Northern Lights tour, or a morning at Santa Claus Village.
