What solar maximum means
Around solar maximum, the Sun produces more sunspots, solar flares and coronal mass ejections — all of which drive stronger geomagnetic activity and bigger auroras, sometimes visible much further south than usual.
Why Rovaniemi still wins
Even in quieter years, Rovaniemi's position under the auroral oval means reliable aurora. Near solar maximum, the displays are simply more dramatic and more frequent.
