Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle at 66.5°N — the perfect latitude for the Northern Lights. So yes, on active, clear nights you can absolutely see the aurora there. But there's a catch worth knowing before you rely on it.
The light-pollution problem
Santa Claus Village is a busy, well-lit attraction, and the airport is right next door. That ambient light washes out the faint, low aurora on the northern horizon — where displays often begin. You'll see strong (KP 4+) displays overhead, but miss the subtler ones.
When it works
On a clear night during a strong geomagnetic display, the aurora is visible from the village and makes for magical photos above the Christmas scenery. Simply look north, away from the brightest lights, and let your eyes adjust.
The better approach
For the best chance — and the best photos — combine your Santa Claus Village visit by day with a dedicated Northern Lights tour after dark. Your guide drives to a dark location with a clear horizon and chases clear skies, so you don't miss the fainter displays.
Best of both
Many guests do exactly this: meet Santa and cross the Arctic Circle in the afternoon, then hunt the aurora in the evening. It's the perfect Rovaniemi day.
