Overview

Driving to Rovaniemi is a scenic adventure, but Arctic winter roads demand respect. Here's what to know.

Routes

From Helsinki it's about 820 km (roughly 10 hours) north; from Oulu about 200 km (2.5 hours). The E75/Road 4 is the main artery north.

Winter driving rules

Winter or studded tyres are mandatory November–March. Daylight is short, roads can be icy, and reindeer often wander onto roads — drive slowly and stay alert.

Tips

Keep the tank topped up (long gaps between stations), carry warm clothing and a charged phone, and consider the Santa Claus Express car-carrier train to save the drive. See our getting there guide.
