Overview

The sauna is sacred in Finland — there are more saunas than cars. Knowing the simple etiquette helps you relax and fit right in.

What to wear

Traditionally you go nude, but at mixed public or hotel saunas a swimsuit or towel is fine and common. Always sit on a towel for hygiene.

How it works

Throw water on the hot stones for "löyly" (steam), relax, then cool off outside or with an ice dip, and repeat. Keep voices calm — the sauna is a peaceful space.

Good manners

Shower before entering, don't wear strong fragrances, and follow the host's lead on nudity and timing. See our sauna guide.
