Ice fishing is a quintessential Finnish winter pastime and a wonderfully calm way to spend a few hours on a frozen Lapland lake. It's easy, meditative and great for all ages.
How it works
Your guide drills a hole through the thick lake ice with an auger, sets you up with a short rod and line, and shows you the technique. Then you wait — jigging gently — in the peaceful Arctic silence.
What might you catch?
Common catches include perch and other small lake fish. Landing a fish is a bonus, not a guarantee — the real draw is the stillness, the snowy scenery and the campfire.
What to wear
You'll be sitting still on the ice, so warmth matters — dress in proper layers and warm boots. See our packing guide.
Good for families
Ice fishing is safe, gentle and hands-on, making it a great family activity between more energetic adventures. Many trips finish with grilling your catch — or sausages — over a campfire.
