Ice swimming — avanto in Finnish — is dipping into a hole cut in a frozen lake, usually between hot sauna sessions. It's a beloved Finnish tradition and a genuine Arctic thrill.
How it works
You warm up in a hot sauna, then step out to a ladder set into the ice hole and lower yourself in for a few seconds. The cold is intense but brief — then you return to the warm sauna. The hot–cold contrast is invigorating and, many say, addictive.
Health and safety
Many people find it boosts mood, circulation and resilience. Keep the dip short, breathe calmly, never go alone, and skip it if you have heart or circulation conditions.
First-timer tips
Wear neoprene socks and a wool hat, keep your head above water, and warm up thoroughly afterwards. See our sauna & ice swimming guide.
Pair with the aurora
A lakeside sauna and dip is a magical way to end an aurora evening.
