Korouoma Canyon is one of Finnish Lapland's most spectacular natural wonders — a deep, forested gorge where a series of waterfalls freeze each winter into towering columns of blue-white ice, some over 50 metres tall. It's a bucket-list day trip from Rovaniemi.

The frozen waterfalls

In deep winter, the canyon's waterfalls transform into giant ice sculptures that draw hikers, photographers and ice climbers from around the world. The most famous frozen falls include Jaksamankoski and the aptly named "Mommon köngäs."

The hike

A guided winter hike (often with snowshoes) descends into the canyon along a scenic trail. It's moderately active — expect a few hours on snowy terrain — with a campfire lunch typically included.

Ice climbing

Korouoma is a renowned ice-climbing destination. Guided beginner sessions let you try scaling a frozen waterfall with ropes, crampons and axes — no experience required.

How to visit from Rovaniemi

Korouoma is roughly 1.5–2 hours' drive north-east of Rovaniemi, so a guided day trip with transfers is the easiest way to go. It pairs beautifully with a wilderness day and an evening Northern Lights hunt back in the city.
