Rovaniemi is one of the most family-friendly aurora destinations in the world. Between the Northern Lights, Santa Claus Village and snowy adventures, it's a genuine bucket-list trip for children — and with a little planning, aurora hunting works beautifully with kids.
Are Northern Lights tours suitable for children?
Yes. Our Northern Lights tours welcome families, with warm campfires, hot drinks and a heated vehicle between stops. Small groups of max 8 keep the experience calm and personal — never a crowded bus.
Keeping children warm
Warmth is everything for a happy child. We provide thermal suits and boots in children's sizes; you bring their base layers, wool socks, hats and mittens. Hand and foot warmers are a small luxury that makes a big difference. See our winter packing list.
Timing it right
The best aurora hours (roughly 9pm–1am) are late for young children, but in December the lights can appear much earlier in the afternoon darkness. Let kids nap beforehand, and remember the campfire and snacks are part of the magic even before the lights appear.
Best family activities to pair with the aurora
- Santa Claus Village — meet Santa and cross the Arctic Circle.
- Ranua Wildlife Park — polar bears and Arctic animals on an easy boardwalk.
- Ruka Coaster — a gentle-yet-fun ride where kids set their own speed.
- Husky and reindeer sleigh rides through the snow.
Family booking tips
Book daytime activities that don't exhaust the children, keep evenings flexible for the aurora, and give yourselves at least three nights to improve your chances. Peak December dates sell out early.
