Ounasvaara is Rovaniemi's own hill, right beside the city — a friendly spot for downhill and cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing, with lovely views over the town and rivers.
Downhill skiing
Ounasvaara has a handful of downhill slopes suited to families, beginners and intermediates, with equipment rental on site. It's not a huge resort like Ruka or Levi, but it's convenient and relaxed.
Cross-country & more
Extensive cross-country trails (some floodlit) wind through the forest, and there's sledding and snowshoeing for non-skiers.
Aurora and views
The hilltop offers open views — on a clear, active night you may even glimpse the aurora from up here, though a dark-sky tour is far better for the lights.
Getting there
Ounasvaara is just across the river from the centre, a short drive or bus ride away.
