Ranua Wildlife Park is the world's northernmost zoo and home to more than 200 animals across 50+ Arctic species — including Finland's only polar bears. It sits about 80 km south of Rovaniemi, making it a perfect family day trip.

Finland's only polar bears

The stars of Ranua are its polar bears, Venus and Manasse. Watching these enormous Arctic predators in a natural forest enclosure is unforgettable, especially in the snow.

What else you'll see

A 2.5 km wooden boardwalk loops through the forest past brown bears, lynx, wolverine, Arctic fox, musk ox, wolves, owls and reindeer. Note that brown bears hibernate in winter, so you won't see them from roughly November to March.

Is it good for families?

Excellent. The flat boardwalk is stroller- and child-friendly, the animals are genuinely exciting for kids, and there's a café and a small amusement area on site. It's one of the most family-friendly things to do near Rovaniemi.

How to get to Ranua

Ranua is about a 1-hour drive south of Rovaniemi. The easiest option is a guided Ranua Wildlife Park day trip with door-to-door transfers, so you don't have to drive on winter roads. Many trips can be combined with a husky or reindeer farm visit.

When to visit

Winter is magical — snowy enclosures and active Arctic animals — but the park is open year-round. Allow 2–3 hours to walk the full loop, and dress warmly as it's an outdoor attraction.
