Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Rovaniemi: long enough to see Santa Claus Village, get out into the wilderness, and give yourself several chances at the Northern Lights. Here is a proven itinerary that balances daytime adventures with evening aurora hunts.
Day 1 — Arrival, Santa Claus Village & first aurora hunt
Fly into Rovaniemi Airport (just 10 minutes from Santa Claus Village) and start with the Arctic Circle. Cross the line, meet Santa and send a postcard on our Santa Claus Village Tour. After dinner, head out on your first Northern Lights tour — going out on night one gives you an extra chance if later nights cloud over.
Day 2 — Wildlife or wilderness by day, aurora by night
Spend the day meeting polar bears and Arctic animals on a Ranua Wildlife Park day trip, or snowshoe in Oulanka National Park. Rest in the afternoon, then chase the lights again — the more nights you hunt, the higher your odds.
Day 3 — Snow adventure & family fun
Add a husky or reindeer sledding experience, or take the family on the Ruka Coaster day trip. Finish with a Finnish sauna to warm up before your flight home.
Why build the trip around the aurora
The Northern Lights are weather-dependent, so the golden rule is: hunt on as many nights as possible. Booking daytime activities that don't exhaust you keeps your evenings free for aurora tours. Three nights of hunting gives most guests a very strong chance of success.
Getting around
You don't need a car — our tours include hotel pickup from Rovaniemi. If you plan to explore independently, hire a car with winter tyres (mandatory in Finland from November to March). See our getting to Rovaniemi guide.
