December is the most magical — and most popular — month to visit Rovaniemi. Around the winter solstice the city has under four hours of daylight, so the aurora can appear from mid-afternoon, and Santa Claus Village is in full Christmas swing. Here's what a December trip is really like.
Darkness and the Northern Lights
With 17–19 hours of darkness a day, December offers the longest aurora-viewing windows of the year. Cloud cover near the solstice can be heavier than in the crisp months either side, so a mobile Northern Lights tour that chases clear skies is especially valuable now.
Christmas at Santa Claus Village
December is peak season at Santa Claus Village — festive lights, meeting Santa, and the famous post office handling Christmas mail from around the world. Book Santa activities and popular tours well in advance.
Weather and snow
Expect roughly -5°C to -20°C, deep snow and short, blue-lit "polar day" hours. It's cold but beautiful — dress in proper layers (see our winter packing list).
Best December activities
- Northern Lights hunting on as many nights as possible.
- Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle.
- Husky and reindeer sledding through fresh snow.
- A Ranua Wildlife Park day trip to see polar bears in the snow.
Booking tips
December — especially Christmas and New Year — is the busiest time of year in Rovaniemi. Accommodation and tours sell out weeks ahead, so book early and secure your aurora nights first.
