January is peak winter in Rovaniemi: the coldest and often clearest month, with perfect snow and long, dark nights ideal for the Northern Lights. If you want the full Arctic experience, this is it.
Weather and daylight
Expect -10 to -25°C, occasionally below -30°C on still, clear nights — which are the best aurora nights. Daylight is short (around 4–6 hours) but the twilight is beautiful.
Northern Lights
With 16–18 hours of darkness and frequently clear, cold skies, January offers excellent aurora hunting. Dress properly and join a guided tour that chases clear skies.
Best activities
January has superb snow for husky sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer safaris and snowshoeing, plus Santa Claus Village without the Christmas crowds and a Ranua day trip to see polar bears in deep snow.
Tips for January
It's quieter and better value than December but genuinely cold — bring your warmest layers (see our packing list) and hand warmers.
