Overview

January and March are both excellent for the aurora in Rovaniemi, but they feel very different. Here's how to choose.

January

The coldest, darkest month (-10 to -25°C), with long nights, often clear cold skies and deep snow. Peak Arctic atmosphere, quieter after New Year.

March

Milder (-5 to +2°C), with the deepest snow, long bright days and spring-equinox aurora. Easier for families and first-timers.

Which to choose

Choose January for polar-night intensity and cold clear skies; choose March for the best all-round balance of aurora, snow and daylight. Both deliver the lights.
