Overview

Every month from September to April can deliver the aurora, but if you want the best all-round experience, a few stand out. Here's how to choose.

For the best balance: March

Strong spring-equinox aurora, the deepest snow, long bright days and milder cold — arguably the best all-round month, especially for families.

For polar-night magic: December–January

The longest, darkest nights and full Christmas atmosphere, though colder and busier (December) or quieter and very cold (January).

For value & early aurora: October

Long dark nights, first snow, equinox-boosted activity and fewer crowds. See our full season guide.
