Overview

You don't have to visit at Christmas to get the magic. Rovaniemi's shoulder season delivers excellent aurora with fewer crowds and better prices.

When it is

Roughly late October–November and January–March (outside the Christmas/New Year peak). All have strong aurora and good snow.

Why it's great value

Flights and hotels are cheaper, tours are easier to book, and the city is calmer — while the Northern Lights are just as good, or better.

Best picks

October for first snow and equinox aurora; January for cold, clear skies; March for deep snow and milder days. See our best-time guide.
