Getting from Rovaniemi to Saariselkä and Ivalo
Rovaniemi is the gateway to Finnish Lapland, but many travellers continue north to the fells of Saariselkä and the village of Ivalo for quieter skies, ski slopes and some of the darkest aurora nights in Europe. The most comfortable way to make the journey — especially with family, luggage or ski gear — is a private door-to-door transfer.
How far is it, and how long does it take?
Both destinations sit due north of Rovaniemi along the E75 (the "Arctic Road"). Rovaniemi to Saariselkä is about 260 km and Rovaniemi to Ivalo about 240 km. In winter conditions the drive takes roughly 4 hours each way, with one comfort stop along the route. A private vehicle runs on your schedule — no waiting for connections.
Your options: bus, flight or private transfer
You can travel by public coach, by a short domestic flight into Ivalo (IVL), or by private transfer. The coach is cheapest per person but runs to a fixed timetable with luggage limits and shared stops. Flights are fast but add airport time at both ends. A private minibus transfer is door-to-door, carries all your bags and ski equipment, and — because it is priced per vehicle — is excellent value once there are a few of you.
How much does a private transfer cost?
Our private transfer is €650–700 per vehicle (not per person) for up to 8 passengers, one way. Split between a family or group, that often works out cheaper than individual coach or flight tickets — and far more comfortable. You can book either direction, Rovaniemi → Saariselkä / Ivalo or the reverse, each as a separate one-way trip.
Airport pickups: Rovaniemi (RVN) and Ivalo (IVL)
We happily meet flights at both Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) and Ivalo Airport (IVL). Share your flight number when booking and we track the arrival, so a late or early landing is no problem — your driver is waiting when you step out. Child seats are available on request.
When to travel — and the aurora on the way
The Northern Lights season runs September to April, and the darker skies further north around Saariselkä and Ivalo are superb for aurora. Many guests base a night or two in Rovaniemi for a guaranteed Northern Lights hunt and a visit to Santa Claus Village, then transfer north for the fells. If you are weighing up where to stay, see our guide to Rovaniemi vs Saariselkä for the Northern Lights.
