Rovaniemi and Levi are two of Finnish Lapland's most popular winter destinations, and travellers often choose between them. Both deliver the Northern Lights and Arctic activities — but they have different personalities.

Northern Lights

Both sit at excellent aurora latitudes with clear Finnish skies. Levi is slightly further north, but Rovaniemi's chances are equally strong. As always, chasing clear skies with a guided tour matters more than the exact location.

Skiing

Levi wins for skiing — it's Finland's largest and most popular ski resort, with extensive slopes and lively après-ski. Rovaniemi has a smaller hill (Ounasvaara).

Santa & attractions

Rovaniemi wins here — it's the official home of Santa Claus, with Santa Claus Village, the Arctic Circle, the Arktikum and easy trips to Ranua's polar bears.

Access

Rovaniemi has its own airport with direct year-round flights from Helsinki and an overnight train. Levi is reached via Kittilä Airport with fewer connections plus a transfer.

Which should you choose?

Choose Levi for a ski-focused holiday; choose Rovaniemi for Santa, easy access and the full mix of Arctic experiences with the aurora. For most first-time Lapland visitors, Rovaniemi is the more complete base.
