For a shot of adrenaline, nothing beats a snowmobile safari across frozen lakes and through Arctic forest. Rovaniemi's vast, snowy wilderness makes it some of the best snowmobiling country in the world.
What a safari is like
After a safety briefing, you follow a guide in convoy along wilderness trails and across frozen lakes, reaching remote spots no car can. Speeds are managed by the guide to suit the group.
Do you need a licence?
Yes — a valid driving licence is required to drive a snowmobile solo (international licences accepted). Passengers can ride without a licence, and you can share a two-person machine.
Minimum age and safety
Solo driving is generally 18+; younger passengers can ride pillion (often from around age 8) or with an adult. Helmets and overalls are provided.
What to wear
Wind chill at speed is intense — dress in warm layers under the provided thermal suit; see our packing guide.
Combine with the aurora
Evening snowmobile safaris can venture into dark, light-pollution-free wilderness — ideal for spotting the aurora. Pair with a dedicated Northern Lights tour for guaranteed hunting.
