Snowshoeing is the simplest way to explore Lapland's deep snow — no skill required. Strap oversized "shoes" to your boots and you can walk on top of snow that would otherwise swallow you.

How it works

Modern snowshoes clip onto winter boots and spread your weight so you float over deep snow. Walking is intuitive — a slightly wider stride is all it takes. Guides provide the snowshoes and often poles.

What to wear

Warm layers, waterproof winter boots, hat and gloves — you'll warm up as you walk. See our packing guide.

Where to go

Gentle forest trails around Rovaniemi are perfect for beginners, and a guided Oulanka National Park snowshoeing tour leads to the frozen Myllykoski rapids and hanging bridge.

Peaceful and photogenic

The silence of a snow-laden forest is magical — and it's a lovely daytime pairing with an evening aurora hunt.
