Both Rovaniemi and Tromsø, Norway sit under the auroral oval, and both are superb places to see the Northern Lights. So which should you choose — stay in Finnish Lapland around Rovaniemi, Ruka and Kuusamo, or cross the border to the Norwegian coast? Here's an honest comparison, and why you may not have to choose at all.
Rovaniemi & Finnish Lapland: dark, dry, inland skies
Rovaniemi sits right on the Arctic Circle at 66.5°N, under the aurora zone. The inland climate means drier air and more stable, clear nights than the coast, and low light pollution once you leave the city. It's a classic snowy-forest Lapland setting, and it pairs naturally with Santa Claus Village, husky and reindeer safaris and Ranua Wildlife Park.
Tromsø: coastal drama and whales
Tromsø, at nearly 70°N, is further north and sits right on the aurora oval too. The coastal weather is less predictable than inland Finland — more cloud can roll in — but guides simply drive to find clear skies, and Tromsø's trump card is the winter whales in its fjords. Nowhere in Finland can you pair the aurora with a realistic chance of seeing humpbacks and orcas.

The honest answer: do both
You don't actually have to pick. Our 2-Day Tromsø Arctic Adventure starts in Finnish Lapland — with pickup from Rovaniemi, Ruka or Kuusamo — drives you across to Tromsø for an evening aurora hunt and a whale-watching cruise, then brings you back. You get the inland base and the coastal whales in one short trip.
Good to know: the Tromsø adventure runs 1 December 2026 – 31 January 2027 only, with a minimum of 2 guests. If you're staying in Rovaniemi the rest of your holiday, it slots neatly alongside our Guaranteed Northern Lights Tour.
Which is easier to reach?
If you're already based in Rovaniemi, Ruka or Kuusamo, Finnish Lapland aurora tours are on your doorstep every night of the season. Tromsø is a longer haul — a scenic day's drive across the border — which is exactly why we run it as a guided 2-day trip with a hotel night included, rather than leaving you to arrange transfers, accommodation and excursions yourself.
