A winter trip from Rovaniemi and Finnish Lapland across to Tromsø combines three cold-weather settings in two days: long hours in the vehicle, a night-time aurora hunt, and a morning out at sea. Pack for all three and you'll be comfortable throughout. Here's the tried-and-tested list.
The layering system
Arctic warmth is about layers, not one thick coat:
- Base layer: merino wool or thermal synthetic top and bottoms — avoid cotton.
- Mid layer: fleece or wool jumper for insulation.
- Outer layer: a windproof, waterproof shell jacket and trousers — essential on the water and in wind.
Extremities matter most
- Feet: wool socks and insulated winter boots rated to at least −30°C.
- Hands: thin liner gloves under thick outer mittens — liners let you use a camera without fully exposing your hands.
- Head & face: a warm hat and a buff or balaclava for wind on deck.
The sea day is colder than you think. Wind chill on an open Arctic fjord in December bites hard. Bring your warmest windproof layer specifically for the whale-watching cruise, even if the drive felt mild.
Camera & aurora gear
- A camera that allows manual/long exposure for the aurora (many phones now have a night mode that works well).
- Spare batteries — cold drains them fast; keep them in an inside pocket.
- A small tripod or a stable surface for night shots.
- A zoom lens for whales, if you have one.
For the road and at sea
- Motion-sickness prevention if you're prone to it — both the long drive and the cruise can be lively.
- A reusable water bottle and a few snacks.
- Any personal medication, plus travel insurance documents.
- Sunglasses — low winter sun off snow and water is dazzling.
What you don't need to worry about
On our 2-Day Tromsø Arctic Adventure, transport, your hotel night in Tromsø, the guided aurora hunt, the whale cruise and lunch onboard are all handled — so your job is simply to pack warm and bring a camera. Dinner and breakfast aren't included, so budget a little for those.
Trip dates: the Tromsø adventure runs 1 December 2026 – 31 January 2027, minimum 2 guests. December and January are the coldest, darkest weeks — pack accordingly.
