Aurora hunting means standing still in the cold, so you need more warmth than for active sports. Here's exactly how to dress for -25°C in Rovaniemi.
The layering system
- Base: merino wool or synthetic thermal top and leggings (never cotton).
- Mid: a fleece or light down jacket, plus thick trousers.
- Outer: a windproof, insulated jacket and trousers — on tours, we provide a thermal oversuit over your own layers.
Extremities
Insulated boots rated to at least -30°C with two pairs of wool socks; liner gloves under waterproof mittens; a warm hat plus a balaclava; hand and foot warmers.
Standing-still tips
Keep moving gently, don't let clothing get sweaty, and step onto an insulating mat rather than standing on ice. See our full packing guide.
We provide the heavy gear
On our tours, thermal overalls, boots and mittens are included — you just bring good base and mid layers.
