When Does the Aurora Season Start & End?

The Northern Lights season in Rovaniemi runs from roughly late August/September to early April. It's defined not by the aurora itself — which is present year-round — but by darkness.

Why the season is what it is

The aurora is always happening high above, but you can only see it against a dark sky. In summer, the midnight sun keeps the sky too bright; from September to April, the nights are dark enough.

The season month by month

Sept–Oct: mild, equinox-boosted, no snow yet. Nov–Feb: longest, darkest nights, deep snow. March–early April: spring equinox displays with milder days. See our best-time guide.

When it ends

By mid-to-late April the nights grow too bright, and the season closes until autumn.
