Drone aurora shots look incredible online, but they're technically tricky and tightly regulated. Here's what to know before packing a drone for Lapland.
Finland's drone rules
Finland follows EU drone regulations: you must register as an operator, label your drone, keep it in visual line of sight, and respect no-fly zones (including near airports like Rovaniemi). Always check current rules before flying.
The cold-weather reality
Aurora photography needs long exposures, but drones hover and vibrate, so night shots are hard and often noisy. Sub-zero Arctic cold also drains drone batteries extremely fast and can cause failures.
Better for landscapes
Drones shine for daytime snowy-landscape footage rather than the aurora itself. For the lights, a tripod-mounted camera or phone gives far better results.
Focus on the ground
Most guests get their best aurora images from the ground on a photography tour — no drone required.
