Two pieces of gear matter most for Northern Lights photography: a stable tripod and a fast, wide lens. Get these right and everything else is fine-tuning.

The lens

You want wide and fast: a focal length around 14–24mm (full frame) to capture big sky, and a wide maximum aperture of f/2.8 or wider to gather light. Prime lenses like 14mm or 20mm f/1.8 are superb.

The tripod

Any long exposure needs a rock-steady tripod. Look for one that's sturdy in wind, easy to adjust with gloves on, and not too heavy to carry. Metal leg locks can be cold — twist locks help.

Helpful extras

A remote or the 2-second timer to avoid shake, spare warm batteries, and a headlamp with a red light to protect night vision.

No gear? No problem

On a photography tour, tripods are available and your guide helps with settings — even phones get great results.
