Overview

One of Rovaniemi's classic moments is crossing the Arctic Circle — and taking home an official certificate to mark it.

The line

The Arctic Circle (66°33'N) is marked on the ground at Santa Claus Village, running right through the central square. Stepping across it is the iconic photo.

The certificate

You can buy an official Arctic Circle crossing certificate as a souvenir — a fun keepsake, especially for children, confirming you've entered the Arctic.

What it means

Above the Arctic Circle, the sun stays below the horizon for at least one full day in winter (polar night) and never sets for at least one day in summer (midnight sun). See our Arctic Circle guide.
