Reindeer herding is central to Sami livelihood and identity, and has shaped the culture for centuries. Many Sami families still herd today.
Language and craft
There are several Sami languages, and traditional handicraft — duodji — includes beautiful items in wood, bone, leather and silver. The colourful gákti (traditional dress) varies by region and family.
Experiencing it respectfully
Choose authentic, Sami-led or Sami-respecting experiences, ask before photographing people, and avoid buying imitation "Sami" souvenirs. Learn about Sápmi rather than treating the culture as a costume.
